Modern choirs for people who love to sing

Who We Are

inChoir Leaders

The Musical Director for inChoir is Mark Heppell. Mark started inChoir in East Grinstead in February 2009. He is an experienced MD and has worked on many shows in East Grinstead, Crawley and Horsham. His credits include The King and I, The Wizard of Oz, Les Miserables, Jack the Ripper, Magic of the Musicals, Tommy, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Return to the Forbidden Planet, Jekyll & Hyde, and Rent among many others.

He plays keyboard in local function band The Outfit and works regularly as accompanist, teacher, cocktail pianist, pit musician and repetiteur. Along with our inestimable vocal coach, Karen O'Connor, Mark is responsible for all the arrangements used by inChoir. He tries to get to as many inChoir sessions as possible, and regularly runs the sessions in East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Tunbridge Wells, Dorking and Crawley.

He also tells the most appalling jokes, so if you know any better ones, please let him know.

Karen has been a singing teacher / vocal coach for 15 years and boasts several West End performances from her students and three number 1 hits. She has performed with several bands over the years including 15 years with The Soul Kats, Viva ( a 10 piece Big Band), Spank and most currently her 70s duo Glitterboots.

Over recent years, Karen has taken on the role of Musical Director for several shows and revues . Another venture was session singing for many years. Karen's musical journey started with the school choir at Ifield Community College with Patrick Allen who took that scruffy bunch of kids on to win a National Choral Competition. She owes everything musically to this man who inspired her so much.

Karen is extremely proud of what inChoir has achieved over the years. It has been an absolute dream.

Jon is a primary school teacher in East Sussex. He acquired his love of singing and performing in the local church choir at the age of 9, and has since become involved in a very wide range of musical projects, including large concert choirs, completing a degree in music at University in Wales, playing the french horn and violin in several town orchestras, touring Europe with a Madrigal choir, and directing a barbershop quartet. He has performed on stage in a variety of musicals and plays, including lead roles in 'Godspell', 'Princess Ida', and 'Four Weddings and a Funeral; the Musical'.

Currently, he plays the bass guitar for 'Champagne Supernova', a busy function band, and he can (occasionally) be seen fronting the classic rock trio, 'The Lost Patients'.

Jon was very flattered to be asked to run the Crowborough branch of inChoir, and he is very much looking forward to performing with them in the near future.

Hilary has absolutely loved singing and performing since she was tiny, and as no-one has asked her to stop yet (well, not within earshot anyway), she's just carried on doing it!  She enjoys all sorts of music, from Puccini to Punk, so therefore loves the fact that she never knows quite what she's going to be teaching to the choir each week, due to the wide range of songs that inChoir work on.

She's a member of the professional vintage trio, Three Penny Piece, and the close harmony octet, Serendipity, and has a vocal tuition practice in her home town of Lewes.  Hilary has taken great pleasure in seeing Uckfield inChoir develop over the two years since it was established, and really looks forward to helping them continue to grow in future.

Jude has always loved music and has sung and danced since she was very young (whether people wanted her to or not!). She completed 4 years professional training, gaining a diploma in musical theatre and a teaching diploma in Speech and Drama. She worked professionally in Rep., community theatre and theatre in education, before spending three years travelling the world on cruise ships.

In recent years, Jude has run drama and musical workshops for children and adults. She has sung in function bands, big bands and duos and met Mark whilst playing the lead locally in Jack The Ripper, the musical.

Jude loves working with inChoir in the Oxted and East Grinstead daytime choirs, and has very much enjoyed launching our newest choir in Horsham.

Hannah sings professionally as a jazz and swing soloist and with vintage close harmony trio 'Three Penny Piece' and has been running choirs and private singing tuition since 2011.
